I am looking for a small indoor greenhouse (not too expensive)?

Aerogarden
princessdf77 asked:

I love to garden and I am looking for a simple kit that I can use to give my plants a little head start inside. I especially want to grow artichokes this year, they take six months to grow and since I live in freezing cold Michigan I need to get them started inside. I know about the Aerogarden but am looking for something simpler and cheaper. A mini greenhouse with a growth light that won’t cost me an arm and a leg. Can any one recommend a kit or a light or something that will help me out?
But what about light? Would just a regular lamp shining on it be okay? Should I leave it on 24/7 or just when it is light outside?

  1. If you are not to worried about looks, try this. If you have a tall, free standing shelving/storage unit type thing, get all your plants in the pots you wish to have them in and get a large clear plastic bag- cover the shelve and it’s an instant greenhouse. Even taking a small plastic bag and covering just a pot will create a greenhouse. I’ve looked online and greenhouses are mighty expensive. The link below has some other ideas for greenhouses- maybe it’ll spark more for you.

Also, I’ve seen greenhouses where people build a small box with 2×4’s, then if you have a old window laying around the house (not many people do hehe), you can use that as the lid. Happy gardening =0)

I would go to a garden store, Home Depot, or Lowe’s type place and see if they have garden safe light bulbs. I imagine if you used a regular light bulb that you use in a family room, it could burn the seedlings or dry out the soil fast. Maybe a low wattage bulb is best. As for when to use it, that might depend on the plant you are growing. If it’s a full sun type plant, probably majority of the day; semi to partial sun light maybe couple hours in the morning and afternoon. I’m sure light bulbs would help, but they may give off more heat than the sun, especially if the light bulb is placed close to the dirt.

  2. Greenhouse Window

  3. Nor sure if you have a Bi Mart where you are but they have small ones ideal for inside for $37

  4. Here are some ideas from Amazon.com

You could also look for Hydro Pontics - does a great job too. and the kits are not to unreasonable.
